About Counselling and Psychotherapy with me
Before embarking upon my career as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist, I worked in Banking and Finance for some years. Subsequently my journey in life led me to a career change, working in the primary and secondary education sector for 15 years. However, having always had a deep curiosity about the human mind I went onto studying for my BSc (Hons) degree in Psychology, as a mature student. This formed the basis of what I later truly found purpose in, entering the world of Counselling and Psychotherapy. The journey has been long, but one which I intuitively was drawn to, and a day does not go by when I don’t look back and say ‘this is where I was meant to be…’
After my BSc degree in Psychology I went on to study an MSc degree in Therapeutic Counselling (based on rigorous theory and training), and which is fully accredited by the BACP - the leading professional association for members of the counselling professions in the UK. I trained as an Integrative therapist, which means my therapeutic training allows me to incorporate elements of Person-Centred, Psychodynamic and CBT (goal directed) work to suit each client’s needs individually.
What lies at the heart of my practice is the therapeutic relationship. My aim is always to be committed as a person-centred counsellor to providing you with an empathic, and non-judgmental space in order for you to feel safe to talk about any feelings in confidence that you may have not been able to open up about before. From a relational perspective I also explore with my clients and help to identify how unconscious conflicts which are related to the past or earlier relationships may be having an impact on one’s current functioning in life. From a Cognitive-behavioural therapy or CBT perspective I am able work with my clients to identify, monitor and evaluate how negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviours maintain psychological distress such as anxiety and depression.
Key Aspects of my Counselling Services
Specialist Motivational Counselling for Students
After some years of Counselling practice, I now specialise in working with students as I have extensive experience of working with students in schools and university. I have always thoroughly enjoyed and had a real passion for helping people to enhance their motivation and find their inner commitment for growth. Exploring and overcoming ambivalence, are key in my work to helping clients identify their own reasons for change, and to build resilience towards making positive change.
Person-centred
The focus is always on my client’s values, and needs. I work with empathy, non-judgement, and collaboration to build a bond. I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship and work closely to explore various challenges such as personal emotional issues, as well as academic concerns, and career planning. Reflecting throughout the therapy is encouraged to help clients understand their inner processes which affect every day thoughts and behaviours and to gain a deeper degree of self-understanding.
Goal directed
The counselling process will be aimed at working with my client to develop a treatment plan that aligns with individual’s goals. Clients are encouraged to challenge dysfunctional behavioural patterns and develop healthier ways of being. I use evidence-based techniques, and interventions to help clients gain insight into their thoughts and feelings, to bring about their desired change, and enhance overall well-being.
